Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
