The Citizens Three-Nil The Red Devils: Hemp finds the net in City comfortable victory.

Just as the recent storm swept through the north-west the night before, City swept Manchester United aside at the their home ground. It was a statement three goal win for Andrée Jeglertz’s side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that firmly established their leadership claims as they consolidated their standing at the top of the table.

Consecutive Defeats for United

This result signalled successive WSL defeats for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, leaving them seven points off the top team with their championship aspirations hanging by a thread.

Manchester United's capacity to manage domestic and European football with a limited squad has been a hotly discussed issue since they earned a place in the European competition. Reviewing the fixture list, it always felt like this was the matchday that would fully examine this ability. Unfortunately for the visitors, they looked weary throughout, the memorable win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

The United manager had attempted to rotate the squad with a a few adjustments. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all provided freshness, although the omission of the in-form Melvine Malard to the bench raised a few eyebrows.

City, in contrast, have fewer loading worries. The City coach made one adjustment from last week’s win over Everton with Hemp making her return to the lineup since healing from injury.

Dominant First Half

The trouble started to build for the United boss and his team from the opening minute. This was a demonstration of the strength from Manchester City whose potent forward line played with and tore United open with a superb opening period showing that saw them score three goals in 21 minutes.

This placed City firmly in control and saw the visitors disorganized. Before this fixture, the away side had allowed just six in this WSL season but they collapsed in the face of City’s offensive ingenuity.

Early Chances

The omens came quickly when Miedema used her strength to muscle Zigiotti off the ball, only to drag her shot past the post. Hemp was at the heart of everything early on, using the room left by Riviere down the visitors' right side. Her crosses were causing problems and led to an opportunity for Yui Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg scrambled off the line.

The Red Devils had multiple sorties ahead, their long-ball tactic giving them alternatives in the wings but they could not test Yamashita. City, in the meantime, controlled possession, teasing their rivals and trying to pull them out of their structure.

Goals Galore

They turned chances into goals with almost half an hour played when Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A cross to the far post was directed across goal by Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to nod home. It was City’s seventh header of the term.

They extended their advantage with two more goals just before the interval. When Rose was able to maraud through the midfield from defense, the field opened up for the hosts. The prominent Kerstin Casparij received possession on the right side before sending a pinpoint driven ball for Bunny Shaw to force home. A short time later, they had a additional score after a rapid change in the ball saw Lauren Hemp allowed the room to drive a shot home from outside the box.

After the Break

The clearest substitution came from Skinner at the half-time as Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was ineffective to alter the outcome of the match. Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came nearest, rattling the upright, but the away team were lacking in ideas and did not manage to produce a single shot on target.

The home side, meanwhile, could have increased their cushion when a delightful Miedema through ball sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it was insignificant to the hosts. Previously unable to overcome any side who placed above them the previous campaign, Jeglertz’s side now have wins against Arsenal and Manchester United to position them in a commanding situation after nine games.
